Finding good quality snacks can be a challenge.
Narrowing things down to foods with ingredients that are considered “superfoods” helps. Broadly defined, these are unprocessed foods that help you lead a healthy lifestyle – that may help maintain or reduce your weight, fight illness or disease and maybe even live longer.
There are those who swear by raw foods, a group I’m not necessarily one of. But after trying Navitas Naturals Blueberry Hemp Superfood Power Snack, I’m at least partially leaning that direction.
This delicious, bite-sized snack is certified gluten-free, USDA organic, vegan, GMO- and dairy-free. It contains no refined sugar, preservatives and artificial colors or flavors. It’s also a certified raw food, meaning it hasn’t been processed.
In putting together this very tasty treat, Zach Adelman, Navitas’ CEO and founder said “We wanted to provide a nutritious snack in a different form than your regular nutrition or energy bars.”
So they packed a bunch of top quality, incredibly nutritious ingredients into it that many folks know little about.
Navitas’s first Power Snack was their Cacao Goji, made with goji berries, a small fruit grown in Asia that are filled with powerful antioxidants, whose health benefits have been linked to boosting the immune system, lowering cholesterol and possibly helping to prevent cancer.
These Snacks contain a number of other unusual ingredients.
Lucuma powder (a fruit that’s similar tasting to vanilla), was added to give a kind of a dairy-like flavor.
Maca powder (from maqui, a superfruit that helps your endocrine system) and was added as an excellent antioxidant boost. It has one of the highest ORAC values (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), which refers to the measurement for antioxidants developed by the National Institute on Aging in the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
These snacks include a berry called camu camu, which is similar looking to a grape. “It has the highest natural source of vitamin C of any food in the world,” says Adelman. Grown in the Amazon basin, just one teaspoon of this gives you over 1,100 percent of your recommended daily Vitamin C!
One of the most unusual, and unexpected, ingredients is chia. Most know it as a green plant. But it’s been known around the world as a nutritious grain. Grown primarily in Central and South America and Australia, chia seeds swell to twelve times their size when soaked in water, leaving you feeling fuller and more satisfied. The Aztecs were known to carry them and eat the seeds while traveling their routes.
Chia provides omegas and is an excellent source of dietary fiber, said Adelman. Navitas Naturals uses sprouted chia powder in the Snacks.
The predominant flavors of the Blueberry Hemp flavored snacks are blueberry and hemp.
An easily digestible, complete source of protein, hemp is rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals. Before tasting this snack I wasn’t a hemp fan, but now I’m a believer!
Blueberries are full of phytonutrients, which many scientists believe have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may protect against heart disease, colon cancer and other ailments.
Rounding out the ingredients are other wholesome raw foods such as date paste, sesame seeds, cashews and sunflower seeds.
Adelman says these Power Snacks are “built for powerhouse nutrition.”
They pack a good punch of nutrition, he said. “They’re satisfying and nutritious!”
You get 45 percent of your recommended daily intake of Vitamin C if you eat 1 oz. of these snacks daily, said Adelman
Besides Blueberry Hemp, these treats come in two other varieties: Cacao Goji and Citrus Chia, an orangy-lemon flavored snack.
The company is working on developing new flavors, possibly including coffee and pomegranate, though no word on when they’ll be available.
You’ll find these 8 ounce, stand-up reseaable and recyclable packages of Navitas Naturals Power Snacks at natural food stores, including Whole Foods, and online at Amazon, iHerb.com and NavitasNaturals.com.
