Oprah Winfrey to get into organics?

According to an article in the New York Post, apparently Oprah Winfrey has filed several patent applications with  the US Patent and Trademark Organization.

One application is for “Oprah’s Organics”, which would encompass bath soaps, sunscreen, massage oils, hair products. as well as organic salad dressings and frozen vegetables, soups, beverages and snack dips. The applied-for names “Oprah’s Harvest”, which would include a beverage and catering service, and “Oprah’s Harvest” were also submitted for this fall.

A rep for Winfrey said: “The trademarks were filed for Oprah’s farm on Maui to enable the farm to grow and distribute produce on Maui and throughout the Hawaiian Islands.”

Interesting that Oprah would move in this direction. If true, she could be a powerful force for moving the acceptance of organics by consumers forward in a very big way. And if she took on the issue of non-GMO’s, wouldn’t that be HUGE?!

We’ll keep an eye on this story and let you know as things develop.

  1. As a great fan of organic food I welcome Oprah’s initiative and I hope it will definitely increase its popularity among people who are not yet convinced about its quality. However, I always try to find as much information as possible, positive as well as negative, and I have to admit that certain facts I’ve learnt recently make me think more about the choices I make every day and now I completely subscribe to the theory that not every aspect of conventional agriculture should be subject to criticism.
