An Eco-Friendly Paper Towel Alternative

The versatile Skoy cloth is a great paper alternative

Americans use more than 90 million tons of paper annually – over 700 pounds of paper per person!

The EPA says out of the 250 million tons of trash Americans generate each year, thirty-four percent – 85 million tons – is paper. According to an Arizona State University report, if U.S households used 3 less rolls of paper towels per year, we’d save 120,000 tons of waste and $4.1 million in landfill dumping fees.

Weighed against that, a colorful, 100 percent biodegradable paper towel alternative sounds pretty good. The Skoy – named after a Swedish word meaning “just for fun”, resembles a mix between bright-colored fabric and ribbed cardboard.

Europeans have used a similar product for over fifty years. “Every household has one,” says Michelle Lundqvist, co-founder of Skoy Enterprises.

The colorful Skoy never smells and can be microwaved periodically

Horrified at the amount of paper towels used in the U.S – 2.5 million disposed of each year – Lundqvist and Karen Peterson, mothers of pre-schoolers in Encinitas, California, created an American version of this environmentally friendly product.

Made of natural cotton and wood-based cellulose pulp, the Skoy absorbs fifteen times its weight, the equivalent of using 15 rolls of paper towels in an average home. “The cotton makes a real difference in the durability and feel (of) a cloth,” said Lundqvist.

The Skoy’s excellent as a cleaning cloth for kitchen and bathroom sinks, countertops, floors and bathtubs. It’s also useful for cleaning golf clubs, patio furniture and garages. Dishwasher and washing machine safe, it can even double as a wash- or face cloth.

Just wet the Skoy and use it to clean almost anything you'd use a sponge for

To use the versatile Skoy, wet first, wring gently, then use. When done, rinse, wring, then let dry. Amazingly, a Skoy never smells, unlike other cloth or synthetic materials that retain bacteria. To keep it fresh, microwave it periodically for three minutes, making sure it’s wet before doing so.

“This is a habit changing product,” says Lundqvist. People usually use what their parents used to clean, she said. This offers a fun alternative, “that brings some sparkle to cleaning.”

“It’s going to save you money,” said Peterson. Having tried it for a month, my own paper towel use decreased by two thirds.

Skoy teaches kids about the environment, Peterson said, since it can be composted. Independent testing showed the Skoy broke down within 5 weeks sixteen weeks in a city landfill.

“Cleaning is a drag,” said Lundqvist. “(Skoy) can add a bit of fun to it.”

Available in different colors, or in white only, Skoy comes in several designs and patterns. Larger sized Skoy are now also available for cars and restaurant use.

Sold as a four-pack, the Skoy is available online and at retailers for $6.99.

I do hope that more and more people will get to the paper recycling and reusing band wagon so that we do not have to worry too much wasteful paper management. Aside from making alternative paper towels, we can even a lot of things with our shredded paper such as making use of them for packaging.
