Alcoa receives coveted “Cradle to Cradle” certification

Alcoa Inc.,  leading producer of primary aluminum, fabricated aluminum and alumina since its founding in 1888, has earned the silver Cradle To Cradle Certification for its primary aluminum.

The Cradle to Cradle certification establishes a product’s sustainability from its creation to its end-of-life. Products awarded this certification must meet specific criteria, involving materials, reutilization, renewable energy use, water stewardship and social responsibility.

This certification was developed and awarded by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC), a global sustainability consultancy and product certification firm that developed the Cradle to Cradle® concept in 1995. Alcoa is the first aluminum company to receive this covered certification.

Alcoa can boast some pretty impressive statistics. Nearly 75% of all the aluminum it produced since 1888 is still being used today. Recycling aluminum uses 95% less energy and it produces 95% less greenhouse gas emissions than making metal from new materials.
