Help arrives for oil-soaked penguins of Nightengale Island

Rescue teams are beginning to aid oil-soaked penguins of Nightengale Island

Three weeks after the freighter MS Olivia grounded and began spewing oil in territory of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic Ocean, rescue teams have now arrived to provide critical aid and cleaning operations for the large colony of northern rockhopper penguins that call that area their home.

After delays forced by bad weather and treacherous seas, teams from The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SACCOB) have been setting up the specialized equipment, materials and medical supplies necessary to help with feeding and cleaning the oil-soaked penguin population.  Member of the SACCOOB were impressed with the rescue efforts of islanders, praising them for their efforts under difficult conditions and with very limited resources.
