A solar menorah lights the way

This solar-powered menorah stands in the village green in Woodstock, New York

On this the first night of Chanukah, folks in upstate New York have a new way to help commemorate the celebration.

Rabbi AB Itkin of Chabad of Ulster County, has brought to the town of Woodstock, New York, something quite unique – a large solar-powered menorah he built out of spare parts purchased at a local store.  This tall symbol of Jewish freedom stands in the village square, an area where no electricity is available.

This unique menorah will be lit for all nights of the Festival of Lights.

Rabbi Yitzchok Hecht, Director of Chabad of Ulster County, says local Jews expressed enthusiasm about their “Green Menorah.” The area has a Jewish population of about 5000.

Perhaps other communities will be inspired by the example of this solar-powered menorah and create their own for next year.
