Salonpas – a safe effective alternative to pain medication

According to the Institute of Medicine, the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., almost one-third of Americans experience long-lasting pain, which costs the U.S. at least $558 billion per year in medical bills, sick days and lost productivity.

Imagining a life without pain may be difficult for some. But for Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical Company, Inc., good health, freedom from pain and a lifestyle rich in vitality is the foundation of what they strive to deliver.

The company has focused on transdermal drug delivery system technology since introducing its original line of patches in 1903.

A transdermal patch is a medicated adhesive patch that provides a controlled release dose of medication directly to the skin. The medication is absorbed directly into the site of the pain, delivering it where it’s needed most.

Studies conducted by Hisamitsu show that “90 percent of people aren’t getting 100 percent relief from their current pain medication,” said Patrick Carroll, Hisamitsu’s Senior Marketing Director.

Most people who use their Salonpas® products don’t want to use oral medication or “pop pills,” says Carroll.

They’re looking for the least intrusive way to treat their aches and pains.

The beauty of using transdermal technology is that it’s more focused medicine, says Carroll. You can put the medication into the patch that would normally be in a pill.

This helps bypass the issue of stomach sensitivity.

There’s also a safety angle, says Carroll.

By using a patch, there are lower incidents of adverse effects due to the mixing of medicines.

“It’s the idea that less is more,” Carroll said.

The Salonpas Pain Relief Patch provides up to twelve hours of pain relief

The Salonpas line consists of five remarkable products.

Their Pain Relief Patch has been FDA approved and clinically proven to provide pain relief for up to twelve hours. It went through all the clinical studies that a prescription drug would and, because of this, can now authentically make claims that no other similar product can make. It recently was awarded the Best New Product of the Year by Better Home & Garden Magazine, which polled 66,000 people for results.

Their Arthritis Relief Patch – also FDA approved and clinically proven – provides temporary relief of pain related to arthritis, strains, sprains, bruises and simple headaches.

Their Gel Patch Hot-L is formulated to relieve minor aches / pains in shoulders, upper and lower back. Designed to compete with Thermacare, it contains capsaicin, an ingredient derived from hot peppers.

People equate heat with efficacy, says Carroll. But capsaicin takes a while to get through to skin. By adding menthol to the gel patch, you get more instant relief while giving the capsaicin time to work.

Unlike Thermacare, which can burn your skin, the capsaicin gives a false sense of heat, increasing blood flow. Carroll says a small percentage of people are sensitive to it and may experience a heat-like rash. But this illusion of heat acts as an analgesic, loosens muscles and brings temporary relief of aches and pains. The actual temperature of your skin doesn’t increase, said Carroll – only the blood flow, which helps with your pain management.

Salonpas Jet Spray brings fast pain relief, and cools the skin without leaving a greasy feeling

Another Salonpas product is the pain relieving Jet Spray for fast relief of muscle pain and fatigue. It sprays on easily, delivers a strong cooling effect to skin without any greasy feeling and there’s no need to rub it in.

Lastly, their Massage Foam, recommended for tough pain, helps brings pain relief in seconds to minor muscle and joint pain related to strains, sprains, bruises and simple headaches.

FIT Physical Therapy of Redding, California provided a perfect testing ground for these products.

Of the men and women who tried the products, several women experienced the heat-like rash, yet thought the products were helpful. The men who tested them loved both the spray and the massage foam.

Don Smith, a FIT client, said he not only liked the smell of the Pain Relieving Massage Foam, but that “it cuts the pain in half!” He thought it was even better than what they usually used at FIT.

Salonpas line of pain relief products is marketed in throughout the U.S. and in fifty countries around the world. Priced at under $10 each, they’re available at major drugstores and retailers like Rite Aid and Walgreens and online at websites including CVS, and Amazon.
