But one area I never considered during this time (and I should have) was my cosmetics. Who knew that wheat is a major component of many of the major cosmetic brands on the market?
Former research and development expert Tony Vargas, who worked with Avon and Elizabeth Arden, realized there was a need not being met by the larger cosmetic companies.
“We were getting a lot of phone calls from consumers that wanted to know about cosmetics that didn’t have gluten in it,” he said.
After launching Tilth Beauty in 2011, Vargas introduced his luxurious, high performance, 100 percent gluten free skin care products late last year.
Tilth are Made in America, naturally-based skin care products with no parabens, phthalates, sulfates, petroleum based ingredients, synthetic fragrances or artificial coloring. They don’t use animal testing and, unlike many other cosmetic lines, these products contain no genetically-modified ingredients (GMO’s).
Vargas also doesn’t use silicone ingredients in his products, unlike most cosmetic companies. Silicones don’t break down. They’re inert, meaning when you wash your make-up off, they run down the drain, making their way into the water supply.
“Our products are safe and effective,” he said.
Using premium ingredients, Tilth products combine naturally derived bases with proven cosmeceuticals that work.
Vargas uses things like Retinol (Vitamin A) – “a very good cosmeceutical,” he says.
Tilth products also contain botanicals such as berry extracts, which have anti-oxidants, and peptides, which are amino acids.
“All our body’s proteins are made from amino acids,” said Vargas. “We don’t get irritation from them.”
I tested two of their products – their Argan-Tangerine Deep Cleansing Lotion, and their Intense Restoration Moisture Cream. I was impressed with both of these.
The Deep Cleansing Lotion – which is more like a serum – works well as a gentle make-up remover. Incorporating essential and natural oils such as jojoba, argan and tangerine peel, it’s a great anti-aging cleanser with a citrusy scent. My skin felt soft after I used it. The next day I noticed my skin was smoother and softer. And the wrinkles in my forehead are disappearing.
“(The Lotion) will replace any lipids that may have decreased in your skin’s barrier,” said Vargas. “When you replace them, the moisture loss will be less and your skin will pump back up making the wrinkles less apparent.”
The Intense Restoration Moisture Cream contains botanical extracts and oils and has antioxidant and firming properties. It features ingredients such as raspberry leaf wax, black currant seed oil, rose hip fruit oil and flower extracts.
An avid gardener, my skin takes a beating this time of year and I can use all the skin treatment I can get. After using the Moisture Cream as a moisturizer, my skin felt smooth and supple the rest of the day – after just one use!
“All these (products) are great at getting the dirt out of skin without stripping the essential oils from your skin,” said Vargas.
Vargas stresses the importance of moisturizing your skin.
“It’s key to keep a balanced moisture level on your skin,” he said.
Tilth Beauty focuses on environmental sustainability. Vargas makes sure everything in these products is biodegradable, and that they’re made from sustainable sources.
Their green packaging is made in a facility powered by wind power and the packaging itself is approved by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). His facility in Arizona is FDA approved and is certified for making organic products.
Tilth Beauty products work, said Vargas. “You will see a difference in your skin.”
They’re also affordable, something that’s important to Vargas and to consumers.
“We’re giving the consumer a premium product at an affordable price,” he said.
