New $25 million study on GMO food safety to launch

GMO rice graphicWith the apparent defeat in Tuesday’s election of mandatory GMO labeling, it’s fitting that despite the millions of dollars spent by the Grocery Manufacturing Association and the giant food manufacturers to help defeat it, a new $25 million study is about to be launched into the safety of GMO foods and pesticide use.

The “‘Factor GMO’ study will investigate the health effects of a genetically modified (GMO) crop that has been in our food and animal feed supplies for many years. It will answer the question: Is GMO food and its associated pesticide safe for human health?

Since GM foods were introduced in 1994, farmers, retailers, governments, scientists and consumers have been involved in a heated international debate. Until now, there has never been a scientific study that is comprehensive enough to give them a clear answer regarding the safety for human health of any one GM food .

This international study will be the largest and most comprehensive long-term experiment ever conducted on a GM food and its associated pesticide. The scientists involved in Factor GMO come from a ‘neutral’ background. They have no connection to the biotech industry or the anti-GMO movement, a factor that will add credibility to the results. The scientists on the study review board are internationally respected experts in their fields from the U.S., Italy and Russia.

GMO foodsFactor GMO is the first long-term combined GMO/pesticide safety study that has involved full multi-generational, toxicology and carcinogenicity arms.

On November 11th, a press conference will be held at  St. James’ Court, A Taj Hotel in London to publicly launch this long-awaited scientific study. The Factor GMO international scientific review board from the U.S., Italy and Russia will present the details of the study. The Russian NGO, the National Association for Genetic Safety (NAGS), the initiator of Factor GMO, will present details on the organization, funding and security of the study.

There are a great number of questions to be answered – both about the veracity of the study and its “neutral” scientists as well as the data that the study will gather and hopefully make public. There will definitely be plenty of eyes tuned towards how the study progresses and its results. But perhaps this study will shed some definitive light on hazards to our health from the scientific tinkering that’s been taking place with the foods we’re consuming. Stay tuned.
