Papa John’s pizza puts its money on getting rid of unhealthy ingredients

Papa John's PizzaThe pizza world, like the rest of the restaurant world, is highly competitive. As a self-proclaimed pizza aficionado and major fan, I can tell you that not all pizzas are created equal – especially when it comes to flavor and truly natural ingredients.

Papa John’s pizza is the third-largest pizza chain in the U.S. by sales, trailing Pizza Hut and Domino’s Pizza Inc. Papa John’s International Inc. is spending $100 million a year to eliminate artificial ingredients and other additives from its menu, a hefty commitment on its part.

Papa John's logoLast year, the company removed monosodium glutamate (MSG) from its ranch dressing and trans fat from its garlic sauce. Not the company has come up with a list of 14 ingredients that it will banish by the end of 2016. These include  corn syrup, artificial colors and various preservatives.

This is a bold move on the pizza giant’s part. The removal of the offensive ingredients can often affect the flavor, as with Papa John’s ranch dressing. Will loyal pizza patrons complain or will they appreciate the efforts to provide top quality and healthier selections? At the very least, consumers will know that the company walks its talk, something a number of other giant food retailers aren’t. And walking the talk – really offering “Better Ingredients, Better Pizza” – reads well with consumers. And after all, you can’t beat the fact that it IS great pizza!
