Score another one for consumers Another large food manufacturer is paying attention to what we want.

Hellman’s parent company Unilever announced today it was adding 2 new non-GMO products to its line. They are Hellmann’s Organic Mayonaise and Hellmann’s “Carefully Crafted” egg-free dressing and sandwich spread. This comes after the introduction of Hellmann’s non-GMO olive oil mayonnaise last year.

Hellmann’s USDA certified organic mayonnaise is made with all organic ingredients, including organic/non-GMO and cage-free eggs. Hellmann’s “Carefully Crafted” sandwich spread is an egg-free, and cholesterol-free spread made with non-GMO ingredients.

Green America, one of  the nation’s leading green economy organizations, has been on a campaign to educate Americans about genetically modified ingredients (GMO’s), especially GMO’s in mayonnaise. As part of its GMO Inside campaign, it reached out to Hellmann’s to ask the company to go non-GMO. In response, in May 2015 Hellmann’s began offering a non-GMO mayonnaise made with olive oil.

Unilever’s announcement comes after Campbell’s announcement to offer more non-GMO and organic products last year and Campbell’s call for mandatory labeling in January 2016. Apparently momentum in the food industry’s response to consumer demand for healthier food is growing rapidly. In addition to Hellmann’s and Campbell’s, General Mills is now offering non-GMO original Cheerios, Similac now  offers non-GMO infant formula, and Hershey is switching to non-GMO sugar for some of its candy products.

“Consumer demand for organic and non-GMO products has been skyrocketing,” said John Roulac, CEO of Nutiva and co-chair of the GMO Inside Campaign. “As more people are becoming concerned with the ingredients in the food they eat and how it is made, it will be important for other companies to follow Unilever’s lead and offer organic and non-GMO options.”

Consumer demand for non-GMO products and mandatory labeling for those containing GMO’s seems to be paying off. Now if Congress will only get the message. Guess we just need to speak up louder.
