I love gadgets, especially small ones. And though this one isn’t necessarily “green”, it’s so handy that I had to write about it. It solves one of life’s everyday annoyances and that alone makes it worthy of profiling.

We’ve all been there. When you’re in a hurry to get somewhere or to finish something, suddenly that darn zipper breaks!

At this point, many of us are tempted to throw something or mutter loudly at our bad luck. A broken zipper means a change of plans, sometimes expensive repairs and an all around annoying hassle. There’s a handy little gadget that will make all this disappear.

Unique space-saving gadgets for our on-the-go lives

Double Shot is a French Press & double shot coffee mug all-in-one

Americans love their coffee. From Starbucks to Peet’s, the sheer number of coffee specialty places are astounding.

Americans use 23 billion coffee cups every year. The average office worker goes through around 500 disposable cups each year, but the large majority of “hot cups” aren’t made from recycled material, and they’re rarely recyclable. That means those billions of cups – with their synthetic, petroleum-based lining – end up in our landfills, to last for hundreds of years.

Planetary Design – an innovative Montana-based company that’s committed to preserving and perfecting the little things that make life more enjoyable – has created several high quality solutions.

Conserve Smart AV cuts energy leakage from electronics

Conserve Smart AV lets you reduce the level of standby energy your electronics waste

As we fill our homes with an ever-growing array of electronics, we also increase the amount of energy we waste.

A large number of gadgets continuously “leak” small amounts of electricity when they’re plugged in but not in use. That accounts for hundreds of dollars added to our annual utility bills. Home entertainment systems are real energy hogs, consuming wasted energy 24/7 just by being in stand-by mode.

Now there’s a device that can automatically shut them down when they’re not in use. For more on this story see http://bit.ly/qJBKGP.

Electronics recycling made simple

E-waste is a growth industry – literally growing exponentially. The news has been full of stories about electronic waste that’s been either dumped or thought to be recycled that ended up in Third World countries where they’re smashed and/or openly incinerated.

On November 9th, The Story of Stuff Project released a new animated short called The Story of Electronics, with Annie Leonard, which simplifies what really happens to our formerly favorite gadgets when we discard them. They don’t just “go away” – they go somewhere and have a serious environmental impact.

Check out this fascinating video, then pass it along so others can begin to understand that “away” doesn’t mean gone and that by our speaking up to manufacturers, we can create positive change in this negative situation.

“Thanks, guys” to two great people and two great websites

Two great websites gave me “shout outs” today. If you aren’t familiar with the term, that means they gave me / this blog a nice mention that got seen by a bunch of folks online.

So let me return the favor.

Thanks to Nigel Powell, owner and guru par excellence of the Red Ferret Journal for the nice mention of my radio feature, Eco Trends. Red Ferret, by the way, is an awesome resource for the latest, innovative, fascinating sometime silly gadgets and tech from around the world. (For full disclosure, I’m R.F.’s Ecological Editor, so you’ll find some of my posts there too). It’s been going strong for years and is worth checking out.

Thanks also to Shane Shirley-Smith of the cool site Environmental Booty for her link to my recent post on their campaign Virtual Patriotic Bake Sale to Benefit our Soldier’s Kids! The site’s awesome and this a campaign everyone should take a minute to get involved with. You’ll get some scrumtious cookies and make some kids really happy at the same time. Now THAT”S a win-win!

BuyBackWorld gives good prices for electronic gadgets

We all have them – unused, outdated electronic gadgets crammed into drawers, closets and garages. It’s an “out of sight, out of mind” story with an “I’ll get to it sometime” mindset.

An online marketplace called BuyBackWorld is a great fit for all those once-loved “toys”. This site will help you score you some added cash, clear out those chock-full places and help the environment, all at the same time.
