Dr. Seralini to speak this weekend in San Diego

No GMO’s in your favorite foods? Not likely.

There are plenty of headlines about GMO labeling and the mega-money being thrown against it by giant food manufacturers. For consumers, the information is often misleading and confusing.

The terms GMO – genetically modified organisms – and GE – genetically engineered  food – are often used interchangeably. These foods have been altered by adding a type of gene (or organism) that belongs to some other plant or animal. It changes the plant’s structure. Studies are now showing that these are producing some pretty nasty effects on our bodies. For example, they’re seeing  an extraordinary rise in cases and severity of asthma and allergies. First No GMO TV ad hits the airwaves

\Washington faces a big challenge in this Fall’s election – whether or not to pass a mandatory GMO labeling bill. The Yes on 522 group has now produced its first television ad that will hopefully spur the public to vote in favor of this precedent-setting legislation.

If it passes, hopefully it will spur other states to pass similar legislation. Two states have already done so – Maine and Vermont, but those laws are contingent on at least 3 other neighboring states passing labeling laws in order to go into effect. Genetically-engineered pork – coming to stores near you?

GMO Salmon - FDA approvedI find it horrifically fascinating that government agencies such as the USDA, tasked with protecting consumers from any serious health issues contained in our food supply, should be in favor of genetically modified food sources. Yet evidence is growing that some of our organic foods contain GE ingredients (oddly allowed by the USDA) and now that august agency has taken a further step down this potentially hazardous path.
